  • Job Description:

    Spirit of South Carolina, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit maritime education organization based in Charleston, South Carolina.

    We are seeking an experienced Tall Ship Captain to command the traditionally rigged educational schooner Spirit of South Carolina for a six mont period of crew training and programming development tied to the Charleston 250th commemoration.

  • Responsibilities:

    The Captain retains full authority over vessel operations, safety, navigation, and shipboard discipline in accordance with maritime best practices and regulatory requirements. This temporary/interim command will focus on bringing the vessel back into public view for programming and sailing events.

    Key responsibilities include:

    ● Conducting crew training operations and drills
    ● Developing operational outlines and procedure for programming needs
    ● Enforce watchstanding standards
    ● Supporting educational and interpretive programming aboard the vessel

    The Captain will work closely with organizational leadership to ensure that sail training, vessel operations, and historical interpretation are delivered together as a cohesive educational experience.

  • Qualifications/Experience:

    Captains with backgrounds in sail training vessels, museum ships, or educational sailing programs are especially encouraged to apply.

    Applicants must have:
    ● Demonstrated command experience on traditionally rigged sailing vessels
    ● Schooner experience required
    ● Minimum valid USCG 100GRT Master’s License, AB/Aux Sail
    ● Experience in sail training and crew development
    ● Interest in or experience supporting maritime education and historical interpretation
    ● Proven ability to maintain a professional safety culture aboard an educational vessel
    ● Experience working with guests, volunteers, and trainees

  • Compensation: $300 to $400 Contract

    *The vessel maintains a strict guest-ready living aboard policy, and all crew living aboard are expected to maintain professional standards consistent with a public-facing educational vessel.
