  • Job Description:

Peninsula Youth Sailing Foundation (PYSF) seeks a full-time Wooden Classics Program Coordinator to oversee the maintenance, operation, and educational integration of its classic and modern vessel fleet. This role is central to the success of PYSF’s Wooden Classics Program and Maritime Trades Initiative, which combine historic vessel preservation, classic yacht racing, and youth sailing education. The Program Coordinator ensures the readiness, safety, and functionality of our 55-foot Philip Rhodes yawl Ocean Queen V and supports a range of high-performance skiffs and dinghies used by youth sailors.

This hands-on leadership role involves managing routine and long-term vessel care, supervising marine systems upkeep, coordinating with instructors for student work projects, and supporting events on the water. The Program Coordinator also mentors high school students in traditional boatbuilding and repair, fostering a vibrant learning environment that connects craftsmanship, seamanship, and maritime careers.

  • Program & Itinerary:

PYSF’s Wooden Classics Program brings students aboard restored classic vessels for hands-on instruction in woodworking, systems repair, and sail handling. The program blends heritage skills with real-world training, preparing students for marine trades and stewardship of maritime traditions. Ocean Queen V, the program’s flagship, is raced in classic regattas along the California coast and serves as an educational platform for youth and the community.

In parallel, PYSF operates a nationally recognized youth sailing program with high-performance skiffs and dinghies. The Program Coordinator ensures the competitive fleet remains safe, race-ready, and well-maintained. This role plays a vital part in connecting traditional craftsmanship with modern sail training in a dynamic, youth-focused environment.

  • Responsibilities:

Lead preservation, repair, and daily maintenance of Ocean Queen V and other wooden vessels.
Maintain racing dinghies, skiffs, and support boats used in youth regattas and training.
Conduct inspections, troubleshoot mechanical and electrical systems, and schedule preventative maintenance.
Manage tools, parts inventory, dockside safety, and workshop organization.
Collaborate with instructors to supervise student work on restoration and repair projects.
Prepare vessels for races, community sails, and educational outings.
Coordinate logistics for fleet movement, haul-outs, and special events.

  • Qualifications/Experience:

5+ years of experience in vessel maintenance, wooden boat care, or marine systems.
Familiarity with diesel and gas marine engines, plumbing, and basic electrical troubleshooting.
Strong seamanship and boat-handling skills; comfort working on and around the water.
Demonstrated ability to work with youth in educational or mentorship settings.
Highly organized and safety-conscious; able to manage multiple projects and schedules.
First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
Preferred: Experience with classic yacht restoration, traditional rigging, or sail maintenance; USCG license or MMC.

  • Compensation: $25 to $60 hourly
  • Benefits:

Potential liveaboard accommodation for qualified candidates.
Opportunities for leadership and innovation in a growing maritime education program.
Supportive, mission-driven workplace focused on youth empowerment and maritime heritage.
