The Spirit of South Carolina

Story

Spirit of South Carolina is a traditionally rigged, two-masted schooner built in Charleston and launched in 2007 as a sail-training and educational vessel. Designed by naval architect Robert Barrows and constructed using traditional methods with modern safety standards, she reflects the working heritage of historic pilot schooners while incorporating refined, yacht-inspired elements—resulting in a vessel that is both capable underway and striking alongside.

At approximately 140 feet overall with a beam of 24 feet, Spirit carries over 6,000 square feet of sail and is built for offshore passage-making, coastal voyages, and dynamic harbor sailing. Her deck layout and rig are optimized for hands-on training, while her interior spaces—finished in warm wood joinery—offer a level of comfort and craftsmanship more commonly associated with classic yachts than working ships. This combination places her in a unique class: a true sail-training vessel with the experiential quality of a private yacht.

Since her launch, Spirit of South Carolina has served thousands of students and participants through experiential programs along the East Coast and into the Caribbean, including tall ship festivals, regattas, and offshore educational voyages. The vessel is maintained to a high standard, with continued investment in her rig, hull, and systems to ensure long-term performance and preservation.

Today, the organization is expanding its programming to include a broader mix of educational, professional, and public-facing experiences. In addition to youth sail training, Spirit supports maritime heritage interpretation, workforce development pathways, and specialized training opportunities aboard a live, working vessel. Dockside and underway programs invite participants to actively engage—handling lines, setting sail, and learning the systems that have shaped coastal life for generations.

As both a platform for learning and a visible presence in Charleston Harbor, Spirit of South Carolina continues to connect people to the water, to maritime culture, and to each other through the shared experience of sailing.
