Neptun

Story

Built in Elmshorn, West Germany, in 1947, Neptun began life as a fishing Ketch under the name “Planet”. She only fished for 4 years before being seized by Polish authorities after repeated violations of territorial waters. She then was retrofitted with removal of masts, a new propeller, as well as a 37mm cannon and served in the Polish border guard until 1959 when she returned to fishing service under the name “Doker”. She remained in the Polish fishing service until 1993 when she was left abandoned in shipyard. She sat derelict until 1998 when she was purchased privately and converted to a houseboat with schooner rig under the name “Bonaventura”. In 2022, Foreningen Neptun was formed and purchased the ship. Since then, Neptun has established a unique community on board, undergone 2 major refits, and sailed from Denmark to the Central-American west coast, with the end goal being to successfully convert the ship to brigantine rig and complete a circumnavigation.

In addition to sailing the soon-to-be brigantine, Foreningen Neptun also anticipates traditional sail making and wooden boat building programs based in Marstal starting in 2026.
