Story
For over 50 years, young people have come to Mystic Seaport, our nation’s leading maritime museum to learn to sail and live on board the tall ship Joseph Conrad. Each morning, campers tackle the wind and current of the Mystic River and then set off for an active afternoon investigating the Museum’s unique exhibitions. After a late-day sailing session, some “R and R” and dinner, campers spend their evenings with new friends, stargazing in a planetarium, climbing the rigging of the Conrad or enjoying a lively sea music sing-a-long. The Joseph Conrad program is open to individual boys and girls and organized groups ages 10 – 15. Groups must have one adult leader per ten participants. No prior experience is required for beginner sessions, only a desire to participate and learn. Intermediate sessions are for those who have attended a previous beginner session or have had sailing experience. All must hold current Red Cross swimmers certification or its equivalent.
