Story

“Sailing the Dream on the Great Lakes”

The Captain and crew of Schooner Huron Jewel offer the best of sailing with daysails around the Drummond Island, MI area and multi-day trips throughout the Great Lakes and North Channel.

Schooner Huron Jewel, a 78′ gaff rigged schooner, was designed by Captain Hugh Covert and built by he and his wife Julie in three years with the help of over fifty volunteers and launched her in June 2018. Her wood and epoxy construction brings together a blend of traditional and modern – traditional lines and modern building materials – to create a sleek and smooth sailing vessel that handles like a dream.

Drummond Island Tall Ship Company, owned by the Coverts, brings the love of water and adventure to visitors in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Her shallow draft is perfect for cruising close to the shorelines. Enjoy high quality daysails and multi-day cruises that also have an emphasis on the history, geography and ecology of the area.

These trips offer a fun tall ship adventure for all ages to experience and participate in. Weddings, floating bed and breakfast, special events, and public appearances are also offered.

Their philosophy is “Memories are made when you take part in life – take the wheel, hoist the halyard, and ride the wind.”
