The Schooner Ernestina Morrissey is seeking 2 qualified applicants for the position of AB (Able Seafarer) for the 2022 summer sailing season.
The ABs assist the Mates and Captain in the management of the ship’s operations and training / education of the ship’s crew and cadets. The Schooner Ernestina Morrissey is owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and operated by the Massachusetts Maritime Academy as a USCG inspected Sailing School Vessel (Subchapter R) and a Small Passenger Vessel (Subchapter T) home ported in New Bedford, MA. The vessel’s GRT is greater than 100 tons. The first part of the sailing season all crew will be assisting in the outfitting of the vessel for USCG sea trials, which will include helping the rigger and shipyard complete the vessel after recent restorations.
The AB aboard Ernestina Morrissey operates as lead deckhand and will be in rotation as lead watch stander for the Captain’s watch. This is an opportunity for gaining watch leading experience under the direction and supervision of the Captain.
Applicants must have traditional sailing experience, hold an AB Sail endorsement and ideally lifeboatman and be a U.S. citizen. Applicants must have experience as a deckhand on traditional sailing vessels and be able to lead work aloft and on deck.
All crew will be required to follow Covid-19 health and safety guidelines as set by Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Vaccination for Covid-19 is required.
