Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI), has now surpassed 30 years and focuses on delivering extraordinary and transformational programs for youth. Our primary focus is on middle school students while also serving upper elementary, high school, and college students, in addition to STEM related educational voyages. Located in the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the Los Angeles Maritime Institute is a year round operation. We partner with schools for field trips during the school year, then focus on a robust camp program during the summer. We are currently sailing and managing three tall ships; the twin brigantines Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson which are 110′ with 13 sails, and the 130′ three masted schooner American Pride. Our area of service includes the Port Complex (Los Angeles and Long Beach), from San Diego to Santa Barbara, the Northern Channel Islands, and Catalina Island.
- Program & Itinerary:
We seek a professional individual who is passionate about our mission and eager to partner with the Executive Director and staff to lead and grow the organization’s Education Programs. The full-time position of Education Director will be responsible for developing project plans and deliverables. Ensures that goals and objectives are accomplished within prescribed time frames and funding parameters. Enthusiasm for sailing and working with school age youth and the public is essential.
- Responsibilities:
Program Leadership:
Direct the implementation, refinement, creation, and development of curriculum for all educational programs, including summer youth camp sessions.
Update and respond to staff, teachers, and student evaluation of programs.
Develop, update, and implement program manuals.
Maintain our program’s alignment with evolving curriculum standards, educational best practices, and customer feedback.
Communication and Outreach for LAMI programs, mission, and vision with community.
Recruit schools to achieve attendance and budget goals set by strategic plan.
Attend relevant conferences, symposia, and other related events.
Cultivate and build relationships/partnerships with teachers, schools, school districts, and other complimentary community organizations.
Launch and deliver the programs core components, maintain smooth operations, and foster high-quality participant engagement.
Lead delivery of the school program, summer camp programs, Internships, and classroom visits.
Develop and implement Program Guidelines to include learning objectives, content and skills, instructional methods, activities, and learning materials.
Supervise and advise the Education Training & Development CoordinatorAdministrative Duties:
Work with the Director of Sales & Marketing to provide seamless bookings with Teacher/School Administration and community organizations.
Oversee the management of program paperwork
Oversee the management of program data surveys (pre and post sail and longitudinal data) and reporting
Prepare monthly progress and program reports for the Executive Director and LAMI Board of DirectorsBudgeting and Fiscal Oversight:
Create and manage annual program budget, monitor all program expenses
Schedule all education programs, including classroom visits, summer camp schedules.
Any other duties as assigned by the Executive Director. - Qualifications/Experience:
Bachelors or Masters preferred: Education, Marine Biology, Maritime, or related field.
3-5 years of staff management and leadership experience required.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to recruit, motivate, and organize.
Effective organizational skills and ability to work independently and also with teams.
Excellent writing and proofreading skills, good telephone presence.
Positive outlook, strong work ethic, and a sense of humor.
Creative, resourceful and good at solving problems
Demonstrated ability to set priorities and meet deadlines
Proficiency with MS/Google Office Suite, and preferably knowledge of SlackPhysical Requirements:
Ability to lift and carry weights up to 60lbs. and to assist adults and small children in learning.
Ability of stand and sit for long periods and perform tasks that require bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, crouching, climbing, reaching, carrying, walking, pushing, pullling, lifting, grasping, and accessing small spaces on/in boat.
Ability to be on a computer/monitor for long periods of time.
Ability to communicate effectively- including visual, auditory, and tactile.
Ability to work evenings, holidays, and weekends.
Exposure to warehouse and office conditions and be outside during inclement weather conditions including summer sun. - Compensation: $00 to $00 Compensation dependent on Experience, salary paid Bi-Weekly. Regular full-time 8am-5pm hours, totaling 40 hours per week. Role is based in our San Pedro, LA Waterfront office. Flexibility in hours will be required for events, including some weekends and evenings.
