Peninsula Youth Sailing Foundation’s Wooden Classics Program, which includes our new Maritime Trades Program and classic yacht racing initiatives, is seeking a skilled Bosun/Vessel Caretaker.
Peninsula Youth Sailing Foundation (PYSF) is seeking a skilled and motivated Bosun/Vessel Caretaker to join our Wooden Classics Program and support our expanding Maritime Trades and Youth Sailing initiatives. This full-time role focuses on the care and upkeep of our classic vessel fleet — including the iconic Ocean Queen V — while also supporting maintenance of high-performance racing boats and skiffs used in our youth sailing programs.
The Bosun will also assist with hands-on education, helping high school students learn fundamental skills in wooden boat maintenance, marine systems, and seamanship.

PYSF’s Wooden Classics Program blends historic boat preservation, classic yacht racing, and hands-on maritime trades education for high school students. The program teaches traditional skills in woodworking, vessel maintenance, marine systems, and seamanship while offering students opportunities to sail and race on restored classics like Ocean Queen V. Our mission is to connect youth to careers on the water and to preserve the traditions of craftsmanship and seamanship for future generations.

Maintain and repair vessels with a focus on traditional wooden boat care, including varnishing, caulking, painting, and minor structural repairs.
Conduct preventative maintenance on marine engines (gas and diesel) and basic electrical systems.
Manage workshop spaces, maintain tools, and ensure safe operations on docks and in classrooms.
Assist instructors during practical sessions, teaching students skills related to vessel upkeep, boatbuilding, and marine systems.
Prepare vessels for underway activities, educational programs, and special events.
Support logistics related to vessel movements, dock maintenance, and project planning.

Demonstrated experience maintaining and repairing wooden vessels, including finish work and structural care.
Familiarity with marine diesel and gasoline engine maintenance; basic troubleshooting skills in marine electrical systems preferred.
Strong seamanship and safe small boat-handling skills.
Organized, self-motivated, and committed to working collaboratively with students and staff.
Ability to teach and mentor high school-age youth in a supportive and positive manner.
Ability to lift 50 pounds and work outdoors in a maritime environment.
First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).

Preferred Experience
Previous experience working with youth programs, sail training, or vocational maritime education.
USCG MMC, AB, or Captain’s license (helpful but not required).
Familiarity with traditional rigging and sail maintenance.
